A Pacific Rim Whale Festival Maritime Kids Week Event

Join Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society and Parks Canada at the Long Beach Lodge Resort for an afternoon of reconstructing a real Killer Whale skeleton! Build-A-Whale is an interactive program that allows participants to help rebuild the skeleton of an offshore Killer Whale bone-by-bone while learning about the biology, ecology, anatomy, evolution, and conservation of killer whales and other marine mammals. Suitable for all ages! Stop by anytime between 1:00PM and 4:00PM. This is your chance to get up close and personal with a real whale skeleton and ask questions to experts from Parks Canada and Strawberry Isle Marine Research.

This is a Pacific Rim Whale Festival “button event” . Buttons are a $5 suggested donation and will be available on site. Masks are recommended when in close proximity to other participants.

Since 1991, SIMRS has had the honour of promoting and conducting marine research, monitoring, and education in Clayoquot Sound and beyond. To celebrate our 30th anniversary, we are hosting a fundraising event that will help us continue conserving our marine environment for future generations and you're invited!

Join us Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 1:00PM aboard Jamie’s Whaling Station’s vessel “Lukwa”, for a spook-tacular Halloween cruise around Clayoquot Sound! Trick-or-Treat yo' self to food, drinks, live music, raffle prizes, silent auction and more! No need to bring your own boos, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are available for purchase onboard. Costumes are encouraged and a prize will be awarded for the best costume (please keep in mind you'll be required to wear a personal flotation device overtop).

SIMRS Build-A-Whale Presentation

Join SIMRS Research & Education Director, Sydney Dixon, for a “hands-on” virtual Build-A-Whale presentation as part of the NAME-CaNOE 2021 Conference. Build-A-Whale is an interactive program that allows participants to assist in constructing the real skeleton of an offshore killer whale while learning about the biology, ecology, anatomy, evolution, and conservation of killer whales and other marine mammals. This presentation will give educators a sneak peak of the one-of-a-kind display and share some of the unique teaching tools and props SIMRS uses to engage audiences of all ages in ocean literacy.

Kayak for a cause and join our partners at Paddle West Kayaking for a Citizen-Science charity tour! During this 2.5hr tour you’ll paddle around the breathtaking islands of Clayoquot Sound with expert guide and SIMRS sea star survey leader Alys Hoyland. Explore the wonders of the intertidal zone, discover what it means to be a citizen scientist, and contribute to research and monitoring of the devastating Sea Star Wasting Disease. This is your chance to get involved in local marine conservation action by directly contributing to long-term sea star research.

All proceeds from these trips are donated to SIMRS in support of the Sea Star Stewardship Program!

We’re excited to kick off our 2021 field season for the Sea Star Stewardship Program (SSSP). Join us for a virtual training workshop with guest speaker Melissa Miner, a Research Associate with our partners at MARINe. The workshop will prepare prospective volunteers with the knowledge and skillsets needed to join us in the field.

In order to adhere to our Covid-19 Policies, we will be limited again this year with our capacity to take volunteers into the field. Volunteers who participate in our training workshop will be given priority to sign-up for sea star survey dates throughout the season.

Find out about SIMRS research and monitoring efforts aimed at better understanding the offshore species that visit Clayoquot Sound’s deep-water canyons and continental shelf break.
